This was so easy and affordable!
After eight years, the faux leather surface of the earpads had completely flaked off, which is typical here in humid Singapore, where anything remotely rubberised will eventually disintegrate.
I found the Brainwavz "Sony WH-1000XM2 & MDR-1000X Replacement Earpads - Soft PU Leather & Memory Foam Ear Pad Cushions" for less than USD 20.00 & ordered them from the Brainwavz website.

Photo 1: The old ear pads - down to some kind of fabric on the foam that was under the faux leather surface that had vanished.

Photo 3: One old earpad removed using a tiny & thin standard screwdriver - once part of the old ear pad was free, I used my fingers to leverage the rest of it out. Note: Brainwavz suggests that the foam inserts can be removed and cleaned at this stage. Those are so delicate that I decided not to take any chances and just left them as they were.

My trusty Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones were still going strong after years of use, but the ear pads were worn out. I definitely kept them too long. I'd had great results with Brainwavzs before when they turned my Audio-Technica BPHS1, from an instrument of torture with the stock pads to sublime headphones so I thought I'd order some replacement pads for my Sonys. The pads are great quality and installing them was very easy as they are clearly designed to be replaced. The cost of the pads relative to the overall cost of the headphones is tiny. With the new pads installed the headphones are comfortable again and look presentable. If you are thinking about replacing your pads with Brainwavz, stop thinking and just do it. You can thank me later.

My original pads were in very rough shape. The foam had completely collapsed and I almost replaced the headphones because I couldn’t find a suitable replacements until I stumbled upon brainwavz audio. I took the risk and bought these and discovered a whole new world of comfort and noise isolation. That being said I don’t know how they compare to new originals but I can say they are a solid replacement that don’t leave me wanting to buy new headphones.
